Whilst carrying out anti-submarine operations of the coast of Spain as part of the 1st Support Group, HMS Egret had the misfortune to be the first Allied vessel sunk by a gliding bomb.
The Henschel Hs 293 A-1 glider bomb had been used in action for the first time on the 25th August 1943 being dropped and guided by a Dornier Do17 aircraft of the Luftwaffe. On this occasion one sailor was killed on-board HMS Bideford and several other wounded.
