Steward T R wood was one of 764 officers and ratings to loose their lives on the night of the 19/20th December 1941, onboard the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Neptune. The vessel part of 'Force K', a cruiser raiding squadron tasked with locating and destroying Axis shipping off the coast of Libya, strayed into an uncharted minefield along with HMS Kandahar a K Class Destroyer. Only one man survived from the ship's complement, being rescued by an Italian torpedo boat five days after the sinking.
