Bernard Astles was originally from Wallasey, Cheshire but had moved to Chippenham in order to work at Hullavington sometime in 1936. Whilst in Chippenham he met Lillian Britten of Timber Street, the couple married during 1938. Bernard joined the Royal Engineers in March 1940 eventually serving in North West Europe.
