On the 9th August 1944, the 7th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry had been tasked with capturing Les Hameaux, Hameau au Roi and Le Saussay – three hamlets forming a triangle with Les Hameaux being the apex, approximately a mile south of Mont Pincon. The attack commenced at 1230 hours, each infantry company being supported by a troop of tanks. The forward units soon came under heavy fire from German 88mm Anti-tank guns and mortars, the supporting tanks were further hampered by thick hedges, tank traps and the lanes and tracks had been heavily mined, however by 1530 hours the hamlets of Les Hameaux and Le Haussay had been taken. By 1830 hours the remaining hamlets of Hameau au Roi and Le Saussay had also been secured. Private Charles Brewer was one of 79 casualties suffered by the 7th Somerset Light Infantry that afternoon, he was initially buried in a field grave near Les Hameaux before being re-interred at St Manvieu War Cemetery in December 1945.
