Next of Kin Son of Edwin Collett Jones and Florence Helen Jones, of Chippenham
William Frederick Jones was the brother of V E C Jones who had lost his life the previous year. Along with the other crew members of Avro Lancaster I ED521, William was to perish whilst flying on an operation to Duisburg on the 9th April 1943. One of nine aircraft from 460 Sqn to take part in the raid, ED521 had taken off from RAF Breighton, Yorkshire at 2044, armed with 1 x 4,000 lb 'Cookie', 48 x 30lb and 540 x 4lb incendaries. Nothing more was heard from the aircraft after take-off.
In total Bomber command had despatched 5 Mosquitos and 104 Lancasters to Duisburg that night. Heavy cloud cover had hampered bombing, however 50 houses were destroyed and 27 people killed. ED521 was one of 8 Lancasters that failed to return.
