At 16:40 on the 13th November 1943 three Vickers Waricks of 280 Sqn took off from RAF Thornaby, they had been tasked with as Air Sea Rescue search of the North Sea off the Dutch coast. After the search the aircraft made landfall at Whitby, Yorkshire, shortly afterwards they encountered a severe thunderstorm. Moments later Warwick BV336 crashed onto Sleights Moor, Yorkshire. All on board perished;
