The following announcement appeared in the Wiltshire Gazette on the 16th January 1941;
Poisoned by Fumes
A Chippenham soldier Driver Wilfred George Hibberd, RASC of 38 Marshall Street has lost his life in a tragedy which also resulted in the deaths of two other soldiers. It is understood the men were poisoned while they slept by the fumes from a stove which they themselves had installed in their hut. Driver Hibberd, who was 26, leaves a young wife and a five year old son. A native of Chippenham, he was the only son of Mr William Hibberd of Downing Street. He joined the Army in June last and had previously worked in the Chippenham Condensery. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon at Hardenhusih Church when six soldiers acted as bearers.
